Exciting new project – Liquid Biopsies for children

Christopher’s Smile has agreed to fund a groundbreaking project into the use of Liquid Biopsies for paediatric and teenager’s solid tumours. The work will be undertaken by the Institute of Cancer Research and the Royal Marsden Hospital in Sutton. Liquid Biopsies have the potential to transform the way cancers are diagnosed and monitored in addition to providing clinicians with vital information for treatment plans. Circulating tumour DNA is extracted from a sample of blood and in the case of Central Nervous System tumours it is taken from the cerebral spinal fluid. This tumour DNA is then analysed to show critical genomic abnormalities.
We look forward to working with the ICR and the Royal Marsden Hospital on this project with the aim of introducing a new era of diagnosing and monitoring cancer in children and teenagers.
